Royal jelly is a thick, milky-white substance produced naturally within a bee colony. Every bee larva eats royal jelly for its first three days of life. After that, only the queen bee continues to eat it — for her entire life. Fresh vs Freeze-Dried: What's the Difference?

Royal jelly comes in three main forms:

Fresh (raw) royal jelly

Perishable. Must be refrigerated at all times. Shelf life of weeks to a few months. Sour, slightly acidic taste. Difficult to dose precisely.

Freeze-dried (lyophilized) powder

Shelf-stable. 6+ months at room temperature, 2+ years refrigerated. All active compounds preserved — including 10-HDA, proteins, and B vitamins. Easy to dose with a scale. This is the same active ingredient found inside capsules.

Why Freeze-Drying Preserves Everything

Freeze-drying (lyophilization) works by freezing the fresh royal jelly, then reducing the surrounding pressure and applying gentle heat so the frozen water sublimates directly from ice to vapour — bypassing the liquid phase entirely. This avoids the heat damage that conventional drying causes. The result is a dry powder that retains the original nutritional profile: proteins stay intact, 10-HDA content is preserved, and B vitamins remain bioavailable. How to Verify Quality: The COA

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a third-party lab report that verifies the exact composition of a batch of royal jelly. A proper COA will list the 10-HDA content (look for 6% or higher), heavy metals testing (lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic), microbial testing (total plate count, yeast, mould, E. coli, Salmonella), and moisture content.
