The Science Behind 10-HDA: What 200+ Studies Say

I sell royal jelly, so I'm not going to summarise the conclusions. But I can tell you where to find the research.

If you've spent any time reading about royal jelly, you've probably come across the compound 10-HDA. Full name: 10-Hydroxy-2-decenoic acid. It's a medium-chain fatty acid that's completely unique to royal jelly. You can't get it from honey, bee pollen, propolis, or any other natural source. It only exists in royal jelly.

That's not a marketing claim. That's chemistry.

The Volume of Research

As of 2026, there are over 200 published, peer-reviewed studies on 10-HDA. These aren't blog posts or brand-sponsored articles. These are clinical studies, animal studies, and in-vitro experiments published in journals like the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Nutrients, BMC Complementary Medicine, and the Journal of Ethnopharmacology.

I'm not going to summarise the conclusions of these studies. I sell royal jelly, so anything I say about the results would sound like a sales pitch. That's not what this post is for.

What I will do is tell you what the studies are about, so you can look them up yourself.

What the Studies Are Investigating

Researchers have studied 10-HDA in the context of:

  • Its molecular structure and stability
  • How it behaves in human cell cultures (in vitro)
  • Its interaction with certain receptor pathways
  • Comparisons between different concentrations (2%, 4%, 6%, 10%)
  • How freeze-drying (lyophilisation) affects 10-HDA content vs fresh royal jelly
  • Quality control methods for verifying 10-HDA percentage

The research spans multiple countries and institutions. Japan has the largest body of work on royal jelly. Korea, China, Turkey, Iran, and several European countries have also published extensively.

Why 6% Matters

When you see "6% 10-HDA" on a royal jelly product, that means 6% of the powder's weight is this compound. For a 500mg serve, that's 30mg of 10-HDA.

6% is considered the benchmark for high-quality lyophilized royal jelly powder. Fresh royal jelly typically contains around 1.5-2% 10-HDA by weight. When you freeze-dry it (remove the water), the concentration goes up because you've removed the diluting factor.

Some products claim 6% but don't provide a Certificate of Analysis to prove it. Others claim lower percentages (3-4%) because that's what their source actually tests at. The difference matters if you care about what you're actually getting.

Every batch we sell comes with a third-party COA that verifies the 10-HDA content. You can download it from the product page or request it via email.

How to Find the Research Yourself

Go to PubMed (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) and search any of these:

"10-HDA royal jelly"

"10-Hydroxy-2-decenoic acid"

"royal jelly bioactive compounds"

"royalactin"

Filter by "Clinical Trial" or "Review" if you want the highest-quality evidence. Review papers are particularly useful because they summarise findings across multiple studies.

Google Scholar (scholar.google.com) is another good resource. Many papers that are paywalled on the journal site have free preprint versions on Google Scholar.

Why I'm Not Making Claims

We sell royal jelly as a food product in Australia. Under Australian food law (FSANZ Food Standards Code), we can tell you what's in our product but we cannot make therapeutic claims about what it does to your body. That's reserved for products registered with the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) as complementary medicines.

So instead of telling you what 10-HDA does, I'm telling you what it is, how much of it is in our product, and where to find the research. You're smart enough to draw your own conclusions.
