How to Tell if Your Royal Jelly is Real
Not all royal jelly is created equal. Here's what to look for, what to ask, and what should make you walk away.
Why Quality Varies So Much
Royal jelly is not a standardised product in the way that, say, pharmaceutical drugs are. There's no single global regulator checking every batch before it hits the market. That means the quality can range from genuinely premium product all the way down to stuff that's been diluted with starch, sugar, or other fillers to increase volume and cut costs.
The issue is that you can't tell any of this just by looking at the product or reading the front of the label. A bag of diluted royal jelly powder looks exactly like a bag of the real thing. The only way to know for sure what's actually in it is to look at the lab results. That's where the Certificate of Analysis comes in.
The COA: Your Best Friend
A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a lab report from an independent third-party laboratory that tests a specific batch of royal jelly and tells you exactly what's in it. Not what the brand says is in it. What an independent lab actually measured.
Here's what a proper COA should include:
10-HDA content
This is the single most important number on the entire document. 10-HDA is the bioactive fatty acid that only exists in royal jelly, and its concentration is the global industry standard for quality grading. Standard grade is around 3.5 to 4%. Premium grade is 6% or higher. If the COA shows less than 2%, the product may be diluted. Full breakdown of 10-HDA here.
Heavy metals testing
Lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic. These should all be tested for and shown to be within safe limits. Any product you're putting in your body regularly should have this verified. If the COA doesn't include heavy metals testing, that's incomplete.
Microbial testing
Total plate count, yeast, mould, E. coli, and Salmonella. This tells you whether the product was processed and stored hygienically. All results should be within acceptable ranges or show "not detected" for the dangerous ones.
Moisture content
For freeze-dried powder, moisture should be very low (typically under 5%). High moisture means the freeze-drying wasn't done properly, which shortens shelf life and can promote microbial growth.
Batch number and lab name
The COA should reference a specific batch number that matches the product you're buying. It should also name the testing laboratory, and ideally that lab should be accredited (ISO 17025 or equivalent). A COA without a named lab is basically worthless.
Red Flags When Buying Royal Jelly
Over time you start to notice patterns in the products that turn out to be low quality or outright fake. Here are the things that should make you pause before buying:
No COA available
If a seller can't or won't show you a Certificate of Analysis, move on. This is the single biggest red flag. Any legitimate supplier will have a COA for every batch and will happily share it. If they get cagey or make excuses when you ask, that tells you everything you need to know.
No 10-HDA percentage listed
If the product page, label, and marketing material never mention a specific 10-HDA percentage, there's a good chance the product hasn't been tested for it. Serious suppliers know their 10-HDA content because that's what separates premium product from filler.
Price that seems too good to be true
Quality royal jelly costs what it costs. Freeze-drying is expensive. Lab testing is expensive. If someone is selling royal jelly powder at prices that seem impossibly cheap, there's usually a reason. It might be diluted with cheaper powders, improperly processed, or from an untested source. You don't have to pay the most expensive option, but extreme bargains in this space are almost always a bad sign.
Wild health claims
Any product claiming that royal jelly "cures", "treats", or "prevents" specific diseases is making claims that are illegal in Australia (unless the product is registered with the TGA as a therapeutic good, which most royal jelly products are not). Beyond the legal issue, products that rely on outrageous health claims to sell are usually compensating for something. Good products sell themselves on transparency, not miracle promises.
Capsules where filler is the main ingredient
Look at the ingredients list on capsule products. If the first few ingredients are soybean oil, coconut oil, gelatin, lecithin, and beeswax, and royal jelly is listed further down, then the capsule is mostly filler with a small amount of actual royal jelly. What to Look for in Good Royal Jelly
On the flip side, here's what you want to see when you're evaluating a product:
COA available and batch-specific
A real COA that matches the batch you're buying, from a named and accredited lab. Even better if the seller makes it downloadable from the product page rather than you having to email and ask.
10-HDA content clearly stated
The product page, label, or marketing should tell you the 10-HDA percentage and back it up with lab verification. Premium products will be at 6% or higher.
Minimal or no fillers
The ingredients list for pure freeze-dried royal jelly powder should just say "lyophilized royal jelly" or "freeze-dried royal jelly." That's it. Nothing else should be in there.
Clear sourcing and allergen info
You should be able to see where the product comes from, how it's processed, and proper allergen declarations. In Australia, royal jelly is a listed allergen and must be declared.
Proper storage instructions and best-before date
Legitimate products come with clear storage guidance and a best-before date. This shows the seller understands the product and cares about it reaching you in good condition. More on storage and shelf life here.
The Physical Check (What to Look at When It Arrives)
Once you actually have the product in your hands, here are a few quick things to check:
Colour
Freeze-dried powder should be off-white to pale yellow. Some slight variation between batches is normal. If it's bright white (might be cut with starch), dark brown (possibly degraded or heat-damaged), or an unusual colour, be cautious.
Texture
Should be a fine, dry, free-flowing powder. Not clumpy, not sticky, not gritty. Clumps mean moisture got in (could be a storage or packaging issue). Grittiness could mean it's been mixed with something.
Smell
Royal jelly powder has a faint, slightly sour smell. It shouldn't smell like nothing at all (might be diluted) and it shouldn't smell strongly off or rancid (could be degraded).
Taste
Mildly sour and tangy with a slight sweetness. This is the natural taste of royal jelly. If it tastes like absolutely nothing, or if it tastes predominantly sweet, something is off.
